The University of Melbourne is a public research university located in Melbourne, Australia. Established in 1853, it is the second oldest university in Australia, with its main campus in Parkville, an inner suburb north of Melbourne's central business district, and several other campuses spread across Victoria.
The University of Melbourne, incorporated by the Colony of Victoria, is one of Australia's six sandstone universities and is a member of the Big Eight, the 21st Century University of Australia, the McDonnell Institute of International Scholars at the University of Washington and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. Since 1872, various residential colleges have been affiliated with the university, providing housing for faculty and students, as well as academic, athletic, and cultural programs.
The University is made up of ten separate academic units and has links to a number of institutes and research centres, including the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, and the Grattan Institute. Of the university's 15 graduate schools, Melbourne Business School, Melbourne Law School and Melbourne Medical School are particularly well regarded.
